Our Story

My little business was born during covid-19 lockdown number two, though conceived as a dream long before then. The dream was put on hold indefinitely, in an effort to focus on pursuing an education and career in engineering.

When covid-19 hit, I chose to look at it as a blessing in disguise. The world slowed down around us, and allowed me to give my idea of a side-venture more thought.

My obsession with scents started at a young age, when I was obsessed with taking deep whiffs of my mother’s hair and whispering “mama’s hair mama’s hair” over and over in her ear. In my teens, I watched “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer”, and my interest in perfumery grew exponentially. I bought little DIY kits and experimented, never fully understanding the science behind scent notes.

Fast forward 14 years later, my obsession took a turn towards creating the most “perfect” candle. A clean, ethical and all-natural candle, enriched with scents reminiscent of my hometown and childhood. Thus Nūr Candles was born.

Nūr in Arabic translates to “light”, and is a common name for both males and females. The light our candles emit is a soft yellow, soot-free (gross who a likes smokey candle!), and wavers ever so slightly in a calming motion. We’re not making this up! Beeswax candles burn different than paraffin and soy. They are also slow burning, and provide more burn time for the same volume/weight as paraffin.

I continue to learn the chemistry of different essential oils - the nerd in me loves it - but also in an effort to continuously obtain “perfection” in candle form. Much research and development has been put into creating my candles. Beeswax is particularly difficult to work with, and does not like to throw scent off the way paraffin does. That’s where the coconut wax comes in, allowing for a much better hot throw.

Lastly, not all essential oils are created equal. Some beautiful oils are nearly impossible to work with as they have low flash points and burn off before any scent is thrown. Rest assured, we’ve tried and tested our candles to ensure they glow beautifully, and smell good. Like really good. We also source our raw materials in Canada, and try to support other small businesses in our supply chain when we can.

Thank you for choosing local,

The Nūr Crew
